Shirt Care: washing and ironing your shirts
We want to make sure you get the very best out of your shirts. Here are some tips below on how to wash and iron dress shirts, business shirts, and cotton shirts:
Washing your shirt:
1. Wash your new shirt in cold water, always avoid hot cycles if you can. Ensure that you wash it with like colours with a good quality washing detergent.
2. Once washed, it is important to remove your shirt from the machine as soon as possible.
3. While it is still wet – hang your shirt on a coat hanger to dry. This will ensure the creases fall out of the shirt whilst drying.
4. Never tumble dry your shirt as shrinkage is likely if you do this, especially if the fabric has any stretch.
Shirt ironing instructions:
1. After carefully laundering your shirt, leave it to dry; and ideally, while still slightly damp, iron it with a good, heavy iron on a high setting.
2. Always ensure that you have put plenty of water in your iron, as for best results – you need to iron with steam. The cover on your ironing board is also important, so replace it regularly and ensure that it is well fitted and nice and thick.
3. Begin ironing the inside of the shirt cuffs and up the tabs of the sleeves of the shirt.
4. Turning the tab side of the shirt sleeve upward, iron up the inside of the sleeve. Repeat with the other sleeve.
5. Next, fit the shirt smoothly over the end of the board and iron the yoke.
6. Iron the inside-front panels of the shirt. You can iron right over the buttons; the buttons will be protected from the heat.
7. Next, move on to the right-front panel of the shirt, the back of the shirt, the side seams, and around to the left-front panel.
8. The final step is the shirt collar. Spray first with a little water, stretch it taut, then iron over each side. Fold the collar neatly down, and press along the seam.
9. Hang your perfectly pressed shirt on a hanger, buttoning the top button to hold it in place.
